I am, as a creature, ill-shaped toward the forming of habits. I can do something daily for more than a year and then drop it without a second thought—just look at my long-broken 500-day streak learning Spanish on Duolingo. Though I struggle to work out regularly, wash my dishes promptly and practice the ukulele I bought aspirationally, I manage without much issue to brush my teeth. In fact, I look forward to the unfussy, straightforward ritual of regular self-maintenance, a basic ablution to bookend the day.
Perhaps that is why I’ve never liked even the most basic electric toothbrushes. Each I’ve tried has ended up sitting dormant on my bathroom counter. The more I consider these high-tech cleaners, the more I’m convinced simple, manual brushes are better.
