STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A 43-year-old man used a broomstick to strike and injure a senior in broad daylight in West Brighton, authorities allege.

Daniel Seda stands accused in the assault on the 1200 block of Castleton Avenue on May 11 around 10:30 a.m., according to the criminal complaint and police. He lives in the neighborhood that the alleged attack occurred.

Seda approached the victim, a 71-year-old man who was a stranger, on the street at that location, police said. He held a wooden broomstick with a metal tip in his hands and then used that weapon to hit the victim’s head, the complaint alleges.

The victim suffered a laceration, bleeding and substantial pain to his forehead, which caused him to seek treatment at a hospital, police said.

Seda, of the 400 block of Delafield Avenue, has been charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and harassment.

The defendant, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs about 240 pounds, has been remanded to Rikers Island and a psychiatric exam has been ordered. His next court date is June 22, according to public records.

An attorney for the defendant did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
